Unsung Embassy Heroes (Part One)

I often blog about special events in the life of our Embassy--but the day-to-day running of the place is also worthy of attention. For example, my duties as U.S. Ambassador to the Czech Republic include looking out for the welfare and wellbeing of American citizens in distress. Our Consular Section is available 24 hours a day, seven days per week, to help out our fellow citizens who need help because they have been robbed, have lost their belongings, or have misplaced their passports. When U.S. citizens visit our Consular Section with a baby, seeking to transmit their nationality to their newborn, our staff determines the bona fides of the parents so that the child can claim one of the most desirable statuses of all: American citizenship.

Led by our Consul General Charles Jess, our outstanding consular staff enjoys the experience of conferring citizenship on an American child. Some of their other duties are more challenging. Hundreds of thousands of American tourists visit Prague each year. Their trips almost always go well, and few ever need to visit the Embassy. Occasionally, an American in distress does need our help.

Very recently, a grateful U.S. citizen wrote to thank us for the help we gave her cousin, who fell into a coma and became paralyzed in Prague after suffering a serious injury. The family, which lives in the United States, doesn’t speak Czech. Owing to the six to nine-hour time difference between the Czech Republic and the United States, communicating with the hospital would have been trying even under the best of circumstances.

In such cases, the job of helping an American in distress falls to us. Our consular staff served as the go-between, helping the injured party and his family communicate with the Prague hospital; the Czech authorities; and the airlines. The victim has since returned to the United States. His family tells me he has since made a huge recovery.

One other bit of good news emerged from this otherwise unfortunate story. A relative of the victim was so impressed by the help we gave her family member that she reaffirmed her decision to join the State Department, with the goal of working in an Embassy. As she puts it, she “came to this job through her own experiences and decisions, but was inspired by our involvement.” She thereupon “learned about what the State Department is and what an important role we all take when we leave our homes and extended families behind in the United States. “

Much of the good work that our Embassy and the US government does day in and day out is seldom reported by the press. This story reminded me of that, and I wanted to share it, and thank our Consular Section for a job well done.
